Holly Holm is a distinguished professional athlete. She excels in two distinct combat sports. She is a former world champion in professional boxing. She also competed as a champion in mixed martial arts, often called MMA.

Holm holds a unique place in sports history. She is the only fighter to win major world titles in both boxing and MMA. This achievement demonstrates incredible versatility and skill. BoxRec ranks her as the 5th greatest female professional boxer of all time, pound for pound. Fight Matrix ranks her as the 17th greatest female fighter of all time, pound for pound.

Holm's journey began in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was the youngest of three children. Her father, Roger, is a Church of Christ preacher. He has Swedish and Native American ancestry. Because of his profession, fans nicknamed her "The Preacher's Daughter." Her mother, Tammy, is a massage therapist of Irish and French descent. As a child, Holm was very active in many sports. She participated in soccer, gymnastics, swimming, and diving.

Her path to professional fighting started at age 16. She first joined cardio-kickboxing classes. Her instructor, Mike Winkeljohn, noticed her natural potential. He began training her seriously. In September 2001, Holm competed in the International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) USA National Amateur Championship in Kansas City, Missouri. She won the championship in the International Rules Adult Women's Welterweight Division. She won her first bout via technical knockout in 34 seconds. She won her second bout by unanimous decision. This marked the end of her amateur kickboxing career.

Holm transitioned into a highly successful professional boxing career. She became the undisputed welterweight champion in June 2008. She won this title by defeating Mary Jo Sanders by decision. Throughout her boxing career, she defended her titles 18 times across three different weight classes. She was also named the Ring Magazine female Fighter of the Year in 2005 and 2006.

In 2011, she fought Anne Sophie Mathis of France for the vacant IBA and WBAN welterweight titles. Holm lost that match by knockout in the 7th round. However, she avenged this loss in 2012. She defeated Mathis via unanimous decision to become the new champion.

In 2011, Holm made her debut in mixed martial arts. She won her first MMA fight against Christina Domke via TKO. She later competed in Bellator MMA. In 2013, she decided to retire from boxing to focus entirely on MMA. This decision occurred while negotiating a title fight against Cecilia Brækhus.

Holm moved through various organizations, including Legacy Fighting Championship. There, she won the inaugural Legacy FC Women's Bantamweight Championship in 2014. She won that fight via TKO in the fifth round. During that match, she suffered a broken left arm in the first round.

Holm reached the highest level of MMA when she signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Her most famous moment occurred at UFC 193 on November 15, 2015. She fought the defending bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey, in Melbourne, Australia.

Many experts considered Holm a massive underdog. However, she used superior striking to control the fight. Holm won by knockout in the second round with a high kick. This ended Rousey's undefeated streak and her three-year reign. The win is considered one of the biggest upsets in combat-sports history. Holm earned both "Fight of the Night" and "Performance of the Night" bonuses.

Following her UFC success, Holm continued to compete against top talent. She challenged for the UFC Women's Featherweight Championship against Germaine de Randamie in 2017. She also fought Cris Cyborg for the featherweight title later that year. Holm has faced many champions, including Amanda Nunes and Miesha Tate. Even after facing difficult losses, she remained a prominent figure in the sport. In 2025, she signed with Most Valuable Promotions to return to professional boxing.

Her career continues to impact the world of professional combat sports.
