Johnson's athletic foundation began in Parkland, Washington. During high school, he was a standout athlete in several different sports. He competed in wrestling, track, and cross country. He used track and cross country specifically to improve his cardiovascular endurance for wrestling. In 2004, he placed 2nd in the state wrestling tournament at 119 pounds. He placed 3rd in the same tournament during his senior year in 2005. Although he received wrestling scholarships, he chose to attend Pierce College to stay near his family.

His journey into mixed martial arts (MMA) began as a hobby. After two years of training, he joined AMC Pankration. There, he met MMA pioneer Matt Hume, who helped organize Johnson's professional debut. Johnson's amateur career was highly successful. He finished with a record of 9 wins and 0 losses. He won five of those amateur fights by submission. After turning professional, he won his debut in Alaska via a head kick knockout. This victory earned him a contract with the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) organization.

In 2010, the WEC merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). This merger transferred all WEC fighters, including Johnson, to the UFC. Johnson initially competed in the bantamweight division. During a fight against Miguel Torres, he suffered a broken fibula from a leg kick. Despite this injury, he used his wrestling skills to win a unanimous decision. Later, the UFC established a flyweight division. Johnson entered a four-man tournament to determine the first-ever UFC Flyweight Champion. He defeated Ian McCall in the first round and Joseph Benavidez in the finals. This victory made him the inaugural UFC Flyweight Champion on September 22, 2012.

Johnson's reign as champion was defined by incredible consistency and skill. He defended his title 11 consecutive times. This record is one of the most significant in UFC history. During his tenure, he utilized various techniques to win. He won via an armbar submission against Kyoji Horiguchi in 2015. He also won a fight against Ray Borg using a rare suplex-to-armbar move. This specific victory was called the best submission of the year by several media outlets. His championship streak ended in 2018 after a split decision loss to Henry Cejudo.

Johnson's professional statistics show his immense success across different organizations. He holds a professional MMA record of 25 wins and 4 losses. If you include his amateur and mixed rules bouts, his record is 36 wins and 4 losses. At the 125-pound weight class, he only lost a single controversial bout. He also competed at 135 pounds, where he earned titles and notable wins.

In late 2018, Johnson moved to the ONE Championship organization. He was part of a trade involving former champion Ben Askren. In 2019, he participated in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix. He defeated Yuya Wakamatsu in his debut and beat Tatsumitsu Wada in the semi-finals. He eventually defeated Danny Kingad to become the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion. His legendary career is being recognized by the UFC. In March 2026, he was announced as an inductee into the UFC Hall of Fame's Modern Wing.
