Historical materialism is a way to study how human societies grow and change.

This idea was created by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. They wanted to understand the real causes behind big historical events. They did not think history moved just because of new ideas. Instead, they looked at how people work together to survive. This way of looking at the past is called historiographical analysis. It focuses on the ways people make their living.

To understand this theory, we must look at how people produce things. Marx believed that labor is a fundamental part of all history. Humans must work every day to satisfy their material needs. This work is what allows us to stay alive.

This process is broken into two main parts. The first part is called the forces of production. These are the tools, land, and knowledge people use to make goods. Examples include flint spears used by early humans or heavy iron plows.

The second part is called the relations of production. These are the social rules and connections between people during work. These relations are shaped by the tools and technology available at the time. In some societies, people work in different ways than in others. For example, some eras used slavery or serfdom. Later eras moved toward wage labor in different economic systems.

These social connections change as technology improves. This creates a cycle of change in how societies are organized.

Many ideas helped shape this theory over a long time. Marx was influenced by the Age of Enlightenment and thinkers like Hegel. Hegel believed history was driven by a "spirit of the age." Marx disagreed with this specific view. He felt that ideas were not the main engine of change. Instead, he focused on the material world and how people labor.

Marx and Engels wrote about these ideas in works like "The German Ideology" in 1845. They also wrote "The Poverty of Philosophy" in 1847.

Today, we can see these patterns in many different places. We can look at how different eras used different tools to thrive. Ancient groups used hunting and gathering to survive. Later, people worked in feudal systems with lords and serfs. Today, many people work in large capitalist economies.

Even modern factory workers are part of this ongoing story. The theory helps us connect the tools we use to the way our societies are built. It shows how technology and social rules grow together through time.
