Historical materialism

philosophy religion Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Historical materialism is a theory used for historiographical analysis. It is a way to understand how human societies develop over time. This theory was developed by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. They wanted to find the real causes behind major historical events. They believed that history is not driven by ideas alone. Instead, they argued that the way humans work together to meet their needs drives change. This process is tied to the rise of different class societies.

The mechanism of historical materialism starts with the necessity of labor. Marx argued that humans must work to ensure their physical survival. This labor is a fundamental condition of all history. It is a requirement for humans to sustain life every single day. This material need forces people to join together socially. When people work together to produce things, they create a specific mode of production. This mode of production eventually shapes the entire economic system of a society.

To understand this mechanism, we must look at two interdependent structures. The first is the forces of production. These include everything humans use to make what they need. This includes human labor, raw materials, land, and tools. It also includes knowledge and technology. For example, flint-sharpened spears were forces of production for early humans. Later, heavy iron plows became part of the forces of production.

The second structure is the relations of production. These are the social relationships people enter into to carry out production and exchange. These relations are not random or chosen at will. Instead, they are determined by the existing forces of production. In class societies, there is a division of labor. People do not all do the same work. The way people are connected through work depends on the level of technology available.

History can be seen through different stages of these relations. Some thinkers, like Henri de Saint-Simon, analyzed history based on technology and organization. He divided eras into periods of slavery, serfdom, and wage labor. We can see these transitions in different historical examples. Early humans lived in primitive modes of production. Later, feudal societies emerged, often involving serfs.

Finally, modern capitalist economies rely on different systems of wage labor.

The history of this theory is shaped by many intellectual movements. Marx was influenced by the Age of Enlightenment. He also studied the philosophy of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Hegel believed history was driven by a "spirit of the age" or geist. He thought ideas and collective consciousness moved society forward. Marx disagreed with this view. He felt Hegel fell into the illusion that reality was a product of thought. Marx argued that the engine of history is actually found in the material productive process.

Marx and Engels began writing these ideas in the 1840s. They published "The German Ideology" in 1845. This work was a response to other thinkers like Max Stirner. They also wrote "The Poverty of Philosophy" in 1847. Since their time, the theory has been modified and expanded. There are now many Marxist and non-Marxist variants of historical materialism. It remains a significant way to study the connection between technology, labor, and social structure.
