Hiram Maxim was a very busy inventor from the United States.

He was born in Maine on February 5, 1840. Later in his life, he moved to the United Kingdom. Maxim created many different tools and machines. He made a curling iron for hair and a mousetrap. He even invented the first automatic fire sprinkler. This device could spray water on a fire and tell a fire station that a fire was happening.

Maxim is most famous for creating the first automatic machine gun.

He got the idea from a rifle's recoil. Recoil is the backward force felt when a gun is fired. As a child, Maxim had been knocked over by this force. He used that energy to help the gun work itself. The gun would use the force of a shot to close the breech and compress a spring. This stored energy prepared the gun for the next shot automatically.

Maxim worked on many inventions during his long career. Between 1883 and 1885, he patented several ways for guns to work. He also worked on electric lights in New York City during the late 1870s. This led to a long legal fight with Thomas Edison over the lightbulb. Maxim also tried to build machines that could fly. In 1889, he began building a large aircraft with wings. It weighed 3.5 tons and used two steam engines.

His flying machine did not fly successfully, but he learned a lot. In 1894, his machine actually lifted off the ground during a test. It was held down by wooden rails and heavy wheels. Because his flying research was hard, he turned his ideas into an amusement ride.

He called it the "Captive Flying Machine." It used a spinning frame to swing cars through the air. This ride helped him earn money for more research. It was shown at the Earl's Court exhibition in 1904.

Some of Maxim's ideas are still around today. The Captive Flying Machine ride is still running in Blackpool, England. It is the oldest operating amusement ride in Europe. Engineers from Disney even visited Blackpool to look at it. They used what they saw to help design the Golden Zephyr ride. Maxim lived to be 76 years old. He died on November 24, 1916, after years of working with loud machines. His many inventions changed how people lived and worked.
