Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim was a prolific American-born British inventor.

He was born on February 5, 1840, in Sangerville, Maine. Maxim is most famous for creating the first automatic machine gun. However, his curiosity led him to invent many other things. He held patents for hair-curling irons and even a mousetrap. He also designed a steam pump and a pocket menthol inhaler. Maxim's work spanned many different fields of engineering and science.

Maxim's most significant mechanical achievement was the Maxim gun. This weapon changed how warfare worked by making guns automatic. The idea came from a childhood experience with a rifle's recoil. Recoil is the backward force produced when a gun is fired. Maxim realized he could use this energy to power the weapon. Between 1883 and 1885, he patented gas, recoil, and blowback methods.

These methods describe how different systems manage the energy of a shot.

The mechanism of the Maxim gun was quite clever. It used the energy released by a shot to operate itself. When the gun fired, the recoil moved the action. This movement would close the breech, which is the part where the cartridge sits. The action would also compress a spring during this process. This stored energy prepared the gun for the next shot automatically. This cycle allowed the gun to fire many rounds very quickly.

Maxim was also an early pioneer in electric lighting. In the late 1870s, he installed electric lights in a New York City building. This was the Equitable Life Building located at 120 Broadway in Manhattan. In 1878, he cofounded the United States Electric Lighting Company. He worked with Edward Weston to bring these designs to the public. However, Maxim faced long patent disputes with Thomas Edison. Maxim claimed he was the true inventor of the incandescent bulb. He believed Edison used better patent law knowledge to take credit for the work.

In addition to weapons and lights, Maxim studied flight. He began sketching plans for a helicopter as early as 1872. In 1889, he started building a large aircraft with wings. This machine weighed 3.5 tons and used two naptha-fired steam engines. The engines drove two propellers made of laminated pine.

Maxim tested the machine on a rail track at his home in Bexley. During a 1894 trial, the machine actually lifted off the ground. It was only prevented from flying away by wooden rails and heavy wheels. Maxim realized that flight required better power-to-weight engines, like petrol combustion engines.

To fund his flight research, Maxim created an amusement ride. He designed the "Captive Flying Machine" for the 1904 Earl's Court exhibition. The ride used a large spinning frame with hanging cars. As it spun, the cars swung outward to simulate the feeling of flight.

While Maxim called it a "glorified merry-go-round," it was very popular. The ride was built at various seaside resorts, including Blackpool. The Blackpool ride is the oldest operating amusement ride in Europe. It remains almost unchanged from Maxim's original 1904 design.

Maxim's life was marked by both great success and personal struggle. He moved to the United Kingdom when he was 41 years old. He became a naturalized British citizen in 1899 and received a knighthood in 1901. Years of working with loud machinery eventually caused him to become profoundly deaf. He died on November 24, 1916.
