Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American engineer, futurist, and inventor who fundamentally changed how the world uses power.

He is most famous for his work on the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system. This system allows electricity to be sent over very long distances efficiently. Tesla's ideas helped create the infrastructure that powers our homes and cities today. His life was defined by a drive to understand the "wonderful force" of electricity. He was a man of immense vision who often thought many decades ahead of his time.

Tesla's most significant technical contribution was the development of the AC induction motor and polyphase AC systems.

In an AC system, the direction of the electrical current changes periodically. This is different from direct current (DC), which flows in only one direction. Tesla's polyphase system used multiple currents to create a rotating magnetic field. This field allows the induction motor to turn without needing physical connections to the power source. In 1888, these patents were licensed by the Westinghouse Electric company. This partnership turned his theoretical designs into a cornerstone of the global electrical grid.

Tesla's early life in the Austrian Empire provided the foundation for his brilliant mind. He was born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, in what is now Croatia.

His mother, Georgina Mandić, was a talented maker of mechanical tools and could memorize long poems. Tesla often credited his eidetic memory—a type of highly detailed photographic memory—to her influence. He began studying physics and engineering in the 1870s. During high school in Karlovac, he became fascinated by his professor's demonstrations of electricity. He was so skilled at mathematics that he could perform integral calculus entirely in his head.

His path to success was not a straight line and included many challenges. After high school, Tesla nearly died from a severe bout of cholera. During his nine-month recovery, his father promised to fund his engineering studies if he survived. Tesla later studied at the Imperial-Royal Technical College in Graz. While he was a "star of first rank" in his early exams, he did not graduate. He later worked in Budapest at a telephone exchange and in Paris at the Continental Edison Company. In 1884, he immigrated to the United States to work at the Edison Machine Works in New York City.

Tesla's time in America involved significant professional friction, particularly with Thomas Edison.

While working at the Machine Works, Tesla focused on improving generators and troubleshooting installations. He once stayed up all night repairing damaged dynamos on the ocean liner SS Oregon. Tesla eventually left the Edison company after only six months. Some accounts suggest he left due to disputes over unpaid bonuses. He soon started his own company, the Tesla Electric Light and Manufacturing Company, to develop arc lighting systems.

As an independent inventor, Tesla pursued many ambitious and experimental projects. He built one of the first wirelessly controlled vehicles, a small boat.

He also conducted experiments with electrical discharge tubes and early X-ray imaging. One of his most famous, though unfinished, dreams was the Wardenclyffe Tower project. This was intended to be an intercontinental wireless communication and power transmitter. He hoped to distribute electric power through the air globally without the need for wires. However, he ran out of funding before the project could be completed.

Tesla's later years were marked by financial difficulty and isolation. After his major projects lost funding, he lived in various New York hotels.

He passed away in New York City in January 1943. For a long time, his contributions were not widely celebrated by the public. This changed in 1960 when the General Conference on Weights and Measures honored him. They named the unit for magnetic flux density the "tesla" after him. Since the 1990s, interest in his life has grown significantly. In 2013, Time magazine recognized him as one of the 100 most significant figures in history.
