First, you choose your plant material, such as leaves or seeds. You can use them fresh or dried. Some people roast or crush the plants before using them. Next, you pour hot or boiling water over the pieces. This step is called steeping. The plant parts soak in the water for a certain amount of time. This allows the flavors and oils to move into the liquid.

The word "tisane" actually comes from the French language. It traces back even further to the Latin word ptisana. This word came from an Ancient Greek word for peeled barley. In those days, people made a drink similar to barley water. The word "tea" has also changed over a long time. An ancient term for tea was "tu." This originally described many different plants like chicory or smartweed. Later, that name was used only for the true tea plant.

There are many different varieties of herbal infusions to discover.
