He was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1828. His family was very religious and believed in helping others. His father helped orphans and his mother worked with the poor. As a young man, Henry joined groups to study the Bible and serve the needy. He even helped start a YMCA chapter in Geneva in 1852. These early years taught him the importance of social work.

In 1859, Henry traveled to northern Italy for business.

He arrived near the city of Solferino just after a big battle. He saw forty thousand wounded and dying soldiers with almost no care. Henry felt shocked by the suffering he saw. He organized local people, especially women and girls, to provide aid. They used the slogan "Tutti fratelli," which means "All are brothers." They helped every soldier regardless of which side they fought for.

After the battle, Henry returned to Switzerland to share his story.

He wrote a book called "A Memory of Solferino" in 1862. He used his own money to print 1,600 copies. In the book, he suggested a neutral group should help wounded soldiers. This idea led to a meeting in February 1863. Henry joined a five-person committee to make his plan real.

This group became the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Life became very hard for Henry after his business failed. In 1867, a business scandal caused him to lose all his money. He went bankrupt and was removed from the Red Cross committee. For many years, he lived in poverty and moved across Europe. He lived in places like Paris, Rome, and Corfu. People mostly forgot about him during these long, difficult decades. He eventually settled in a small Swiss village called Heiden.

In 1895, a journalist found Henry living in Heiden.

This news brought him back into the public eye. In 1901, he won the very first Nobel Peace Prize. He shared this honor with a man named Frédéric Passy. Henry died in 1910, but his work lives on today. The Red Cross continues to help people in many countries. His life shows how one person's ideas can change the world.
