Henri Pirenne was a famous historian from Belgium.

He was born in 1862 in Verviers. This was an industrial city in the Liège province. Pirenne spent his life studying the past of Europe. He was a professor at the University of Ghent for many years. He even served as the Rector of that university. His work helped people understand how modern Belgium began. He wanted to show how big changes happen over long periods.

During World War I, Pirenne faced a very hard time. In 1914, the German Empire invaded Belgium. Pirenne was arrested by German officers in 1916. He was sent to several prisons, including one in Jena. He was not allowed to have any books with him. To learn new things, he spoke with soldiers from the Eastern Front. He learned the Russian language from them. He also read Russian history books from other prisoners. While in prison, he wrote a massive history of Europe. He wrote the entire work from his memory.

Pirenne is most famous for his ideas about the Middle Ages. This is often called the Pirenne Thesis. He had a new way to look at history. Most people thought the Roman Empire ended when barbarians invaded. Pirenne disagreed with this idea. He believed the Roman way of life continued for a long time. He argued that trade kept the Mediterranean world connected. He thought the real change happened much later in the 8th century. This shift changed how Europe was organized.

His thesis focused on how trade and cities work. He said that Islamic expansion in the 7th and 8th centuries changed everything. This expansion cut off trade routes in the Mediterranean. Because of this, Western Europe became mostly farming land. People stopped using gold coins and Egyptian papyrus. Instead, they used parchment for writing. As trade returned later, new people moved to trade centers. These people were not part of the old feudal system. They helped create the first medieval cities.

Today, many historians still talk about Pirenne's work. Even if they disagree with him, they use his ideas as a starting point. He changed how we think about the start of the Middle Ages. His son, Jacques Pirenne, found his father's unfinished manuscript. Jacques helped publish the work for the world to see. Pirenne died in 1935 in Uccle, near Brussels. His life shows how much one person can teach us. He turned a difficult time in prison into a great discovery.
