Heinz Kohut was a doctor for the mind. He was born in 1913 in Austria. His life was not always easy. When he was young, the Nazi party took control of his home. Many of his family members were killed during this time. Kohut had to leave Austria to stay safe. He moved to Chicago in the United States.

At first, Kohut studied neurology. This is the study of how the brain and nerves work. But he found it a bit boring. He wanted to learn more about human feelings. So, he became a psychoanalyst. A psychoanalyst is a doctor who helps people understand their minds.

Kohut became very famous for his own way of helping. He created a way of thinking called self psychology. He believed that patients should lead the way. He let them talk about whatever they wanted. He would not rush them. He wanted to help them understand themselves. He also became a great teacher. He spent much of his life teaching other doctors how to listen and help.
