Heinz Kohut was a famous doctor who studied the human mind. He is best known for creating a way of thinking called self psychology. This new idea changed how doctors help people with their feelings. Instead of following strict rules, Kohut believed in a different way of working. He wanted to help people understand who they really are. His work helped transform the way modern doctors treat patients.

Kohut's way of working was very special. He believed that the patient should lead the way during a session. The patient's job was to say whatever came to their mind. Kohut did not try to rush the process to make it fast. He took as much time as it took for the patient to get well. He once told a patient that he would help them try to understand themselves. This way of helping focused on the person's own feelings and thoughts.

Kohut was born on May 3, 1913, in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. He grew up in a family that lived in the Ninth District. His father, Felix, wanted to be a concert pianist. His mother, Else, later opened her own shop in Chicago. Kohut had a hard time during his youth because of the Nazi regime. Many of his relatives were killed during the Holocaust. He eventually had to leave Austria to find safety in a refugee camp in England.

After leaving Europe, Kohut moved to Chicago in 1940. He first worked as a doctor in neurology at Billings Hospital. He became board certified in neurology in 1947. However, he felt bored because he spent too much time in a lab. He wanted more contact with human emotions. In 1944, he decided to switch to psychiatry. He became an official analyst in 1950 after passing his exams.

Kohut became a very important leader in the world of psychology. He served as the president of the American Psychoanalytic Association from 1964 to 1965. He was also a great teacher at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. He spent many years teaching a course on how to study the mind. He believed that analysts should act like scientists. This meant they should always keep learning and discovering new things.
