He was best known for creating the comic book Mad. His work used satire to poke fun at popular culture. Satire is a way of using humor to critique society. Kurtzman was very careful with how his stories looked. He acted like an auteur, which means he had total control. He made detailed layouts for his artists to follow exactly. This ensured every drawing matched his specific vision.

Kurtzman had a very clear way of working. First, he would write the scripts for the stories. Next, he created detailed layouts for the artists. He expected them to follow his designs very strictly.
