He is best remembered for his work in satire and parody. Satire uses humor to critique social norms and popular culture. Kurtzman was famous for his intense attention to detail. He worked much like an auteur, a term for a creator with total control. He created specific layouts that illustrators had to follow strictly. This method ensured his unique vision was present in every panel.

Kurtzman’s creative process followed a very disciplined sequence. First, he would write the scripts for the stories. After that, he developed detailed layouts to guide the artists. He worked with top-tier talent such as Will Elder, Wally Wood, and Jack Davis. These artists translated his precise instructions into finished drawings. This collaborative yet controlled system became a hallmark of his most successful projects.

His career included several distinct types of publications. At EC Comics, he began with the New Trend line in 1950. He wrote and edited war comics like Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat. In 1952, he launched the legendary Mad comic book. This project focused on parodies of pop culture and social critique.

Kurtzman’s life began in a period of great change. His parents, David Kurtzman and Edith Sherman, moved from Odesa, Ukraine, to New York. They were part of a Jewish community that faced significant oppression. After his father died in 1928, the family faced extreme financial hardship.

His mother eventually remarried Abraham Perkes, a brass engraver in the printing industry. Perkes encouraged Harvey to view himself as a professional artist. This support helped shape the young man's future career.

His artistic development was evident from a very young age. As a child, he drew elaborate strips with sidewalk chalk. People would often stop to watch him create these works. He was even known to search through garbage cans for Sunday comic sections. He wanted to study every available strip to improve his craft. By age 14, he won a cartooning contest and earned one dollar.

This work provided much of his income during those years. He also moved into television, writing for the animated Mad Monster Party? in 1967. In 1969, he designed and directed several shorts for Sesame Street.
