Many airlines use it as a home base. Japan Airlines uses Terminal 1. All Nippon Airways uses Terminal 2. Other airlines like Skymark and StarFlyer also fly from here. The airport helps people switch between long trips and local trips. It acts as the "Hub of Japan." This means it connects big international flights to smaller domestic ones.

Haneda has a very long history. Before the airport, the area was a resort. It had a place called Anamori Inari Shrine. In 1931, a small airport opened on reclaimed land. The very first flight carried insects to Dairen.

During World War II, it was used for military tasks. After the war, the U.S. military used it as a base. They called it Haneda Army Air Base. In 1952, the land was given back to Japan. It then became Tokyo International Airport.

Many big changes happened over the years. In 1955, the first passenger terminal opened.

In 1964, the Tokyo Monorail started running. This helped people get to the airport quickly. In 1978, most international flights moved to Narita. This made Haneda mostly a domestic airport for a long time. Then, in 2010, a new international terminal opened. This is Terminal 3. It even added a fourth runway. This allows planes to fly long distances at night.

Today, Haneda is one of the best airports in the world.

In 2018, it handled over 87 million passengers. It can handle 90 million people every year. It is the fourth-busiest airport in the whole world. In 2023, it was the second-busiest in Asia. It was even named the best domestic airport by Skytrax. It is a very important part of how people travel in Japan.
