That is a very big area!

Long ago, the land was a resort area. It had a place called Anamori Inari Shrine. In 1931, a small airport opened there. The very first flight carried insects to a new place. Later, the airport grew during World War II. It was used for military planes.

After the war, the U.S. military used the base. They renamed it Haneda Army Air Base. In 1952, the land was returned to Japan. It became Tokyo International Airport.

New buildings were built for travelers. In 1978, most international flights moved to Narita Airport. This made Haneda a domestic airport for many years.

Now, Haneda is changing again. A new international terminal opened in 2010. This is Terminal 3.
