Two ships hit each other in the harbor. One ship was named Mont-Blanc. It was a French ship carrying high explosives. The other ship was named Imo. It was a Norwegian ship. The ships hit at a slow speed. This hit broke barrels on the deck. The barrels leaked a fuel called benzol. Sparks from the hit started a fire. The fire grew very fast.

At 9:04 am, the Mont-Blanc exploded. It was the largest human-made blast at that time. The blast was very strong. It broke almost all buildings nearby. It also made a large wave in the water called a tsunami.
