Halfdan Ragnarsson was a famous Viking leader. He was a commander for the Great Heathen Army. This large group of warriors arrived in England in 865. Some old stories call him a "heathen king." He may have had the nickname Hvitserk, which means "White-Shirt." This nickname might have helped people tell him apart from other men.

His life was full of many big moves. First, his army landed in East Anglia in the autumn of 865. They stayed there during the winter to find horses. The next year, they moved north to Northumbria. They captured the rich settlement of York in late 866. Later, the army moved south to the Kingdom of Mercia. They even spent a winter in the town of Nottingham.

Many stories tell us about his family. Norse sagas say he was one of six sons of Ragnar Lodbrok. His brothers included names like Ivar the Boneless and Ubba. Some people think his family came to England for revenge. They say the king of Northumbria, Ælla, had killed his father. However, historians are not sure if these stories are completely true.

Halfdan held many important titles during his life. He became the first Viking King of Northumbria. He also ruled over London for a time. People even made coins in London with his name on them. In 874, he helped conquer Mercia. After that, he led his group of warriors north. He fought against the Picts and the Britons of Strathclyde.

Halfdan spent his final years fighting for land in Ireland. He wanted to rule the city of Dublin. In 875, he may have killed the King of Dublin. He returned to Northumbria in 876 to settle in an area called Deira. In 877, he went back to Ireland to try to take Dublin again. He died at the Battle of Strangford Lough.
