Halfdan Ragnarsson was a Viking leader. He was a commander of the Great Heathen Army. This was a large group of Viking warriors. They arrived in England in the year 865. Some stories say he was a son of Ragnar Lodbrok.

Halfdan and his army moved through many lands. They took the town of York in Northumbria. Halfdan became the first Viking king of that area. He also ruled in a place called London for a time. Coins made in London even had his name on them.

Later, the army split into two groups. One group went south to fight. Halfdan led the other group north. He wanted to rule the city of Dublin in Ireland. He fought many battles to win this land. He also fought against the Picts.

In the year 877, Halfdan went to Ireland for a fight. He met an army at Strangford Lough. He died in that battle. His men went back to Northumbria after that. People still study his life today to learn about the Vikings.
