The city is located on a narrow strip of land. This strip separates Hakodate Bay from the Tsugaru Strait. A large sandbar connects a former island to the main island of Hokkaido. This special shape is called a tombolo. Mount Hakodate looks down over the whole area. Some people call it Gagyūzan, which means Mount Cow's Back. You can reach the peak by hiking or a cable car.

In the spring, the weather starts to get warmer. Fall starts warm but gets colder very quickly. Sometimes, snow even falls during the late fall months. This makes the city feel very alive throughout the year.

Hakodate has a very long and interesting history. The Ainu people lived in this area a long time ago. The name Hakodate might come from an Ainu word. In 1454, a man named Kono Kaganokami Masamichi built a large house there. Later, the city became a major trading spot. In 1854, the port opened to foreign trade. This happened because of a deal called the Convention of Kanagawa.

This changed how the city connected to the rest of the world.

Many famous things happened in this port. In 1861, a man named Thomas Blakiston lived there. He studied the local plants and animals. During the Boshin War, rebels used the Goryōkaku fort for defense. Today, that fort is a beautiful public park. People go there for hanami, which is viewing cherry blossoms. A tall white tower stands in the park now. It lets you see all the way to mainland Japan.
