She was a star of burlesque, which is a type of stage show. She was best known for her striptease acts. Most performers used a fast, energetic style. Gypsy chose a different way to perform. She used a slow and witty style. She emphasized the "tease" in her act. She often used smart humor to charm her audience. This unique approach made her a legend in her field.

Her path to fame began with a surprising moment.

During a performance, a shoulder strap on her gown broke. The dress fell to her feet despite her efforts to cover herself. Instead of being upset, she used the accident to her advantage. She turned the moment into a focus for her act. This helped her find great success as an elegant performer. She even liked the word "ecdysiast." This was a more dignified name for her profession.

Gypsy's life was full of many different roles. She was an actress and a playwright. She was also a talented author. In 1941, she wrote a mystery thriller called The G-String Murders. This story was later made into a film called Lady of Burlesque. In 1957, she published her memoir, titled Gypsy: A Memoir.
