She was born Judith Tuvim on June 21, 1921, in Queens, New York. Her parents, Abe and Helen Tuvim, were of Russian-Jewish descent. Her father was a political activist and a director for a foundation. Her mother taught the piano. Judith chose her stage name from the Hebrew words "yamim tovim," which means "holidays." She grew up in Sunnyside and went to high school in Manhattan. Her very first job was working at the Mercury Theatre.

Judy began her career in 1938 with a nightclub group called The Revuers. This group included people like Betty Comden and Adolph Green. They performed in famous places like the Blue Angel and the Rainbow Room. Sometimes, the famous musician Leonard Bernstein played the piano for them. Judy found these early years quite hard. She was very shy and sometimes felt sick before shows. She had to perform in rooms filled with smoke. She believed that good entertainers must keep going even in tough places. The group even made an album called "Night Life in New York" in 1940.

Her big break came on the Broadway stage. In 1946, she played a character named Billie Dawn in a play called "Born Yesterday." The character was a bit scatterbrained, but Judy played her perfectly. This role was so popular that she was chosen for the 1950 film version. At first, movie bosses did not want to hire her. However, other famous actors helped promote her talent. Eventually, she got the part and became a huge star. For this movie, she won an Academy Award for Best Actress. She also won her first Golden Globe Award.

Judy was also a wonderful star of musical theater. In 1956, she starred in the musical "Bells Are Ringing." This show featured songs by Jule Styne and dances by Jerome Robbins. For this role, she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She also made a film version of this musical in 1960. People loved how she could change her mood quickly. She could be very funny one moment and very serious the next. One director said her acting could unexpectedly touch your heart.

Life was not always easy for Judy during her fame. In 1952, she had to testify before a government committee. They were asking questions about her political beliefs and associations. Even though many other actors lost their jobs, Judy stayed successful. She was brave and did not name names during the investigation. Later in her life, she faced a serious illness. She died from breast cancer on June 7, 1965. In 1960, she had received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is buried at the Westchester Hills Cemetery.
