Gypsy Rose Lee was a legendary American entertainer of many talents.

She was a famous burlesque performer, actress, author, and playwright. She was most celebrated for her unique striptease acts. While many performers used a fast "bump and grind" style, Lee was different. She emphasized the "tease" through a slow, elegant, and casual approach. She also used sharp wit and intellectual recitation to charm her audiences. This sophisticated style earned her a high reputation in the entertainment world. She even preferred the term "ecdysiast," a more dignified word for her profession.

Her career was defined by a single, unexpected moment of luck. During an early performance, a shoulder strap on one of her gowns gave way. Her dress fell to her feet despite her attempts to cover herself. Instead of being embarrassed, she leaned into the accident. She made the mishap the central focus of her performance. This helped her transition from a singer and dancer into a legendary burlesque star. She eventually became one of the most famous performers at Minsky's Burlesque.

Lee's early life in Seattle, Washington, was marked by complexity. She was born Rose Louise Hovick, likely on January 8, 1911. However, she frequently claimed her birthday was January 9. Her mother, Rose Thompson Hovick, often forged birth certificates for her daughters. This was done to navigate child labor laws or to secure cheaper train fares. Her sister, June Havoc, was also a successful actress in vaudeville and film. The two sisters shared a complicated relationship throughout their lives. Their mother's demanding nature often influenced their paths in show business.

Beyond the stage, Lee was a prolific and successful writer. In 1941, she wrote a mystery thriller titled "The G-String Murders." This book was later adapted into the 1943 film "Lady of Burlesque." She also published a second murder mystery, "Mother Finds a Body," in 1942. In 1957, she released her memoir, "Gypsy: A Memoir."

This book became a major cultural touchstone. It served as the direct inspiration for the 1959 stage musical "Gypsy." The musical, featuring music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, provided her with a steady income.

Lee's life was also defined by her political and social engagement. During the Great Depression, she spoke at union meetings to support New York laborers. Her speeches were noted for attracting very large audiences. She was also a supporter of the Popular Front movement during the Spanish Civil War. She raised money for charity to help Spanish children suffering during the conflict.

Her political involvement even led to an investigation by the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

In her later years, Lee transitioned into television and continued to connect with the public. From 1965 to 1968, she hosted "The Gypsy Rose Lee Show" in San Francisco. The daytime talk show featured guests such as Judy Garland, Woody Allen, and Agnes Moorehead. She was known for her interests in knitting and her love of pets. In 1969, she traveled to perform for American troops in Vietnam. The soldiers famously referred to her as their "sexy grandmother."

Gypsy Rose Lee died of lung cancer in Los Angeles in 1970 at age 59. At the time of her death, her estate was valued at $575,000.
