He studied two big subjects called economics and sociology. Economics is the study of how money and goods move. Sociology is the study of how people live in groups. He wanted to see how these two things worked together. He believed that politics and social rules change how money works. This way of thinking helped people understand the whole world better.

Myrdal looked at how many different things affect a country. He used a special idea called circular cumulative causation. This means that one change can lead to many other changes. For example, how people spend money affects how much businesses grow. This growth then changes how people live and work. He also studied how people's expectations change the economy. If people expect prices to go up, they act differently. These small actions can lead to huge changes in a nation.

He was born in Skattungbyn, Sweden, on December 6, 1898.

His father was a building contractor named Karl Adolf Pettersson. In 1914, Gunnar took the name Myrdal from his family's farm. He studied very hard at Stockholm University. He earned a law degree in 1923 and a doctorate in 1927. He also spent time studying in Britain and Germany. These years helped him become a great expert on global ideas.

One of his most famous books was written in 1944.

It was called "An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy." This book studied how race relations worked in the United States. It showed that American ideals did not match how people were treated. This study helped the U.S. Supreme Court in 1954. That year, the Court ruled that schools could not separate children by race. He also wrote many books about poverty in Asia.

Myrdal and his wife, Alva Myrdal, were a very special team. They both won Nobel Prizes for their hard work. Gunnar won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1974. Alva won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1982. They were the first married couple to win these prizes separately. This shows how much they both cared about making the world better. Gunnar lived to see much of his work change the world. He died in Sweden on May 17, 1987.
