Gary Stanley Becker was a famous American economist. He was born on December 2, 1930, in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. An economist studies how people make choices about money and resources. Becker did much more than that. He used economics to study how people act in groups. This field is called sociology. He was a leader of the Chicago school of economics. He taught at the University of Chicago for many years.

Becker had many big ideas about human behavior. He believed many actions are rational. This means people make choices to get the most benefit. He even applied this to things like crime and family life. He studied why people commit crimes. He looked at how the chance of being caught affects those choices. He thought people weigh the benefits against the costs of a crime. He also studied how discrimination works in jobs. He found that bias can actually increase costs for a company.

One of his most famous ideas is called human capital. He wrote a classic book about this in 1964. Human capital is the idea that people gain value through learning. People invest in themselves through schooling and training. This is like how a company buys a new machine to work better. This investment helps people earn higher wages later. It also helps whole countries grow stronger. His work changed how we think about education and skills.

Becker also studied how families work together. He helped start a field called Modern Household Economics. He looked at marriage, divorce, and how parents spend time with children. He even studied how families turn raw food into meals. This is called household production. He wrote a large book called A Treatise on the Family in 1981. This book helped connect economics with sociology and anthropology. He wanted to see how families make choices as a group.

Many people gave Becker great awards for his work. He won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1992. He also received the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007. In 2000, he was given the National Medal of Science. His research has been cited over 200,000 times by other scientists. Many professors called him their favorite economist. He passed away on May 3, 2014. His ideas still help us understand the world today.
