Gary Becker was a famous American economist. An economist is someone who studies how people make choices. He was a professor at the University of Chicago. He also studied sociology, which is the study of how people live in groups.

Becker had many big ideas. He studied something called human capital. This is the idea that people gain value by learning. He said that school and training are like investments. Just as a company buys machines, people invest in their own skills. This helps them earn more money later.

He also looked at how families work. He studied marriage, divorce, and how parents care for children. He wanted to see how families make choices together. Becker even studied why people commit crimes. He looked at how the chance of being caught affects those choices.

Becker's work helped many different fields. He won the Nobel Prize in 1992. This is a very important award for smart thinkers. He also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007. Many people say his ideas changed how we see the world.
