James M. Buchanan was a famous American economist. He spent his life studying how people make choices. He is best known for creating a way of thinking called public choice theory. This theory looks at how politicians and government workers make decisions. It explores how their own interests can change how they lead. His work helped people understand the link between politics and economics.

Public choice theory works by looking at individual motives. Instead of assuming leaders only act for the public good, it studies their personal goals. Buchanan looked at how people seek to maximize their own utility. Utility is just a word for the satisfaction or benefit a person gets. He studied how these choices affect the way a government functions. This helped researchers see why some political decisions happen the way they do.

Buchanan was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on October 3, 1919. His family lived on a farm with no electricity or indoor plumbing. He served as a Navy officer during World War II. After the war, he used the G.I. Bill to study at the University of Chicago. There, a teacher named Frank Knight changed his views on the market. Buchanan eventually became a professor at many schools, like Virginia Tech.

In 1962, Buchanan and Gordon Tullock wrote a very important book. It was called "The Calculus of Consent." This book helped start a new field of research. Later, in 1986, he won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He also served as the president of the Mont Pelerin Society from 1984 to 1986. He worked with many famous thinkers to share his ideas about freedom and markets.

His ideas connect to how our modern world is run. We use economics to understand many parts of daily life. Buchanan showed that even government rules are shaped by human choices. His work helps us think about how to make societies work better. By studying these choices, we can better understand our own laws and leaders. He remains a very important figure in the history of economic thought.
