Edward C. Prescott was a famous American economist. An economist studies how money and goods move through a country.

He was born in Glens Falls, New York, in 1940. He spent his life studying how the world works. His work helped people understand big changes in the economy. He was a very important thinker in his field. Many people around the world studied his ideas.

Edward was a very smart student. He first studied math at Swarthmore College in 1962.

Then he studied operations research at Case Western Reserve University. In 1967, he earned his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. After that, he became a teacher at many different colleges. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Minnesota. He also taught at Arizona State University and the University of Chicago.

In 2004, Edward won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics.

He shared this honor with Finn E. Kydland. They won for their work on how economies change over time. They studied how rules and plans affect the way people act. They also looked at how new technology changes everything. One of their big ideas was about business cycles. These are the ups and downs in how much a country produces.

Edward and Finn wrote two very important papers. The first was written in 1977 about economic planning. They found that people make choices based on what they think leaders will do.

They used an example about houses built in flood areas. The second paper was written in 1982. It looked at changes between the end of World War II and 1980. They used a model to study many different things. This model showed that technology caused 70% of changes in output.

Edward's work is still used by many people today. He helped create the Hodrick–Prescott filter to smooth out data.

This tool helps scientists see clear patterns in numbers. He was also a very respected leader in science. He was a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences. In 2013, he was the 19th most widely cited economist in the world. He lived a long and very successful life. He died in 2022 at the age of 81.
