One group was the Guelphs. They supported the pope. The other group was the Ghibellines. They supported the Holy Roman Emperor. This fight started over power. Leaders argued about who could pick church leaders.

The names came from old family fights. The Welf family became the Guelphs. The Hohenstaufen family became the Ghibellines.

Many cities chose a side. Some cities wanted to rule themselves. They often joined the Guelphs. Other cities feared the pope's power. They joined the Ghibellines.

Fighting lasted for a very long time. One famous leader was Emperor Frederick II. He was a Ghibelline. He fought many wars against the pope.
