Long ago in Europe, kings and the Church fought for power.

They disagreed about who could choose church leaders like bishops. This fight was called the Investiture Controversy. It lasted for nearly 50 years.

In the 11th century, many nobles chose church leaders. Some even sold these jobs for money. This was called simony. Kings used bishops to help them rule. This made the fight for control even bigger.

One big fight was between Pope Gregory VII and King Henry IV. They both claimed to have the most power. In 1076, the Pope said Henry could no longer be king. This made many people stop obeying Henry. To fix this, Henry went to a castle in Canossa. He stood in the snow to ask for the Pope's pardon.

Even after that, the fighting continued for a long time. In 1122, leaders finally made a new deal.

This deal was the Concordat of Worms. The Church got to choose bishops. But the kings still held power over the land. This helped bring peace to Europe.
