As far back as the 14th century, a grocer sold dry goods. These were things like sugar, tea, and spices. The name comes from a French word for a wholesale seller. This word came from a Latin term called "grossarius." This is also where we get the word "gross," which means 144 items. From the late 1600s to the 1850s, the word "grocery" meant a place to drink. Later, stores grew because food could be kept in cans.

Before 1916, shopping was a slow process.

Customers had to talk to a clerk over a counter. The clerk would find the items for the customer. Everything changed when Clarence Saunders opened Piggly Wiggly in Memphis, Tennessee. This was the first self-service grocery store. It meant customers could walk around and pick their own items. This new way was very successful and helped stores work faster. It allowed fewer workers to help more people at once.

Today, grocery stores come in many different sizes and styles.

Some are small family businesses in rural areas. Others are huge chains like Walmart or Kroger. There are also wholesale clubs like Costco that use a warehouse style. Some stores, called supercenters, are huge and sell almost everything. In some places, large stores have made it harder for small shops to stay open. This has led to a period of change in how we shop. Even with these changes, the grocery store remains a vital part of our lives.
