Most cards have a photo or an illustration on the front cover. People use them to show love, friendship, or celebration to others. You might send a card for a birthday, a wedding, or a graduation. They are also common during holidays like Christmas, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Some people send cards to offer sympathy or encouragement to a friend. Even businesses send cards to their customers to say happy holidays.

Many people also tuck money or gift cards inside to make the gift even more special.

There are many different ways to make these cards. A standard card is rectangular and folded with a printed message inside. You can leave a blank space to write your own note. Some cards are handmade with extra decorations like ribbons or glitter.

You might find pop-up cards that show a 3D surprise when opened. These are inspired by a Japanese art form called Kirigami. Other special cards use quilling, which is when thin strips of paper are rolled into designs. Some even have a small device called a Botski to play recorded music or voices. You can even find reusable cards that let you swap out old pages for new ones.

People have been sending messages of goodwill for a very long time. The ancient Chinese exchanged messages to celebrate the New Year. Early Egyptians used papyrus scrolls to share their greetings. By the 1400s, people in Europe were using handmade paper cards. The Germans even used woodcuts to print New Year messages back then. One very old Valentine card is kept in the British Museum. It was written by the Duke of Orléans to his wife, Bonne.

In the 1850s, cards became much more affordable for everyone. This happened because of better printing and cheaper postage stamps. Sir Henry Cole helped start the tradition of Christmas cards in London in 1843. Later, in the 1860s, Hugh Pierce Jr. invented the birthday card. Many companies began to mass-produce them using famous artists as designers. By 1930, new technology called color lithography helped the industry grow even more. Today, big companies like Hallmark Cards and American Greetings are very successful. They help sell billions of cards to people all over the world.

Greeting cards are a huge part of how we stay connected. In the United Kingdom, people spend about one billion pounds on cards every year. In the United States, people buy about 6.5 billion cards annually. This costs more than 7 billion U.S. dollars each year. You can buy a single card at a shop for a few dollars. You can also find digital versions called e-cards to send through email. Some people even use websites to design and print their own cards. No matter how they are sent, cards help us share our hearts.
