Over the Middle Ages, the name changed through historical sound shifts. It became Graignovol before eventually becoming Grenoble. In the 4th century, the diocese of Grenoble was also founded. This meant bishops held significant political power for many centuries.

In the 11th century, the city became the capital of the Dauphiné. The Counts of Albon chose Grenoble for its central position. They eventually adopted the title of "Dauphin."

This made Grenoble the capital of the State of Dauphiné. The Counts shared authority with the local bishops. In 1339, the University of Grenoble was established. In 1340, a court of justice called the Parlement settled there. In 1349, the last Dauphin, Humbert II, sold his state to France. He did so on the condition that the French heir used the title of Dauphin. This linked the city closely to the French crown.

Grenoble functioned as a vital parliamentary and military center. It sat near the border with Savoy, which was part of the Holy Roman Empire. The city was a crossroads for travelers from Geneva, Italy, and Vienne.

During the Italian Wars, French troops were often stationed there. The city also faced conflict during the French Wars of Religion. In 1575, Lesdiguières became a leader of the Protestants. He later defeated the Catholic Ligue to take back the city.

He also improved the city by building new walls, fountains, and sewers.

Economic shifts shaped the city through the 18th and 19th centuries. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes caused 2,000 Protestants to leave.

This loss actually helped the local glove industry grow. In 1787, 64 glovers produced 160,000 dozen gloves annually. This was a massive increase from earlier years. The "Day of the Tiles" occurred on June 7, 1788. This was an assault by townspeople against royal troops.

Later, the 19th century brought industrial expansion. The first trains arrived in 1858. In 1869, engineer Aristide Bergès helped industrialize hydropower production. This used the surrounding water resources to create electricity.

Napoleon Bonaparte has a famous connection to the region. In 1815, he returned from the island of Elba. He passed near Grenoble at Laffrey.

He met a royal regiment and famously challenged them to kill him. The soldiers joined his cause instead. Napoleon was then acclaimed in Grenoble. General Jean Gabriel Marchand could not stop him from entering the city. Napoleon remarked that he arrived as an adventurer but returned as a sovereign. This event marked a significant moment in his return to power.
