It serves as the prefecture for the Bouches-du-Rhône department. It is also part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The city sits on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is situated near the mouth of the Rhône river. Marseille is the second-most populous city in France, following Paris. In 2023, the city had 886,040 inhabitants. The wider Marseille metropolitan area is much larger. It had a population of 1,900,957 people in January 2022.

Since 2016, the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis has managed wider regional issues. This authority includes Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, and 90 suburban municipalities. It oversees a total population of 1,922,626 people.

The geography of the region is diverse and rugged. To the east, the Calanques offer a dramatic coastline. These are rugged areas with small, fjord-like inlets.

Further east lie the Sainte-Baume mountain ridge and the city of Toulon. To the north, the Mont Sainte Victoire rises above the Garlaban and Etoile mountain ranges. The west features the Côte Bleue and the Camargue region in the Rhône delta.

The city's climate is a hot-summer Mediterranean type. This means summers are hot and mostly dry. Winters are cool and mild with moderate rainfall. Marseille receives 2,897.6 hours of sunlight annually. This is the highest amount of any French city. The mistral, a cold and dry wind, often brings clear skies. This wind originates in the Rhône Valley. A hot, sand-bearing wind called the sirocco also occasionally arrives from the Sahara.

Marseille has a deep history reaching back to antiquity. Greek settlers from Phocaea founded the city around 600 BC.

This makes it the oldest city in France. It is also one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited settlements. The Greeks called it Massalia, while Romans called it Massilia. The city-state remained independent during the Second Punic War. However, it lost its independence after the Roman Siege of Massilia in 49 BC. This occurred during Julius Caesar's Civil War. The city later faced many challenges, including the Black Death and the Great Plague of 1720. During the French Revolution, volunteers from the city sang the national anthem. Their actions helped give the song its name, La Marseillaise.

The maritime economy remains a vital pillar of the city. The Grand Port Maritime de Marseille (GPMM) is a major hub.

It is the first port in France and the second in the Mediterranean. The port is the fifth largest in Europe by cargo tonnage. Every year, 100 million tons of freight pass through these docks. About 60% of this freight is petroleum. This massive operation supports approximately 45,000 jobs. It adds €4 billion in value to the regional economy. While the Old Port once handled most trade, it now serves as a private marina. It remains the heart of the city with restaurants and offices.

Urban development has transformed the city's landscape in recent decades. In the 1990s, the Euroméditerranée project began. This project focused on economic development and urban renewal. During the 2000s and 2010s, many new infrastructure projects were completed. These included the expansion of the Velodrome Stadium. The city also saw the construction of the CMA CGM Tower.

Other projects involved the renovation of the Hôtel-Dieu into a luxury hotel. The city also added new quayside museums. One notable example is the Museum of Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean (MuCEM). Because of these efforts, Marseille has the most museums in France after Paris.

Cultural and social life defines the character of Marseille. The city is highly cosmopolitan due to its openness to the sea. It maintains strong exchanges with Southern Europe, North Africa, and Asia. For example, it has the third largest Jewish community in Europe.

The Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is a famous landmark. Known as "Bonne-mère," this Romano-Byzantine church overlooks the port.

The city is also a major center for sports. It is home to the Olympique de Marseille football club. The city hosted matches during the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2016. Marseille was named the European Capital of Culture in 2013. It also served as the European Capital of Sport in 2017.

Today, Marseille functions as a dynamic Mediterranean crossroads. The economy is supported by excellent transportation links. The Marseille Provence Airport is the fourth largest in France.

The city also hosts several higher education institutions. The University of Aix-Marseille is a key academic center. The metropolitan area has a GDP of US$81.4 billion. This makes it a significant economic engine for the country. The combination of ancient history and modern industry creates a unique urban environment. It remains a vital link between Europe and the wider Mediterranean world.
