The city sits at the confluence of two rivers, the Ille and the Vilaine. This means the two rivers meet at this specific location. Geographically, Rennes is part of the European Atlantic arc. It is situated about 50 km from the English Channel. The city serves as the prefecture for both the Brittany region and the Ille-et-Vilaine department.

A notable feature is the Green Belt. This is a protected area that forms a ring around the city's road system. It creates a boundary between the dense urban center and the more rural surrounding areas.

The climate in Rennes is described as oceanic. While it is in Brittany, it receives considerably less precipitation than the western parts of the region. For example, rainfall in Rennes is only about half of what is seen in Quimper. This makes the rainfall levels comparable to parts of western Germany. The city receives between 1,700 and 1,850 hours of sunshine every year. This amount of sunlight is similar to what is received in Lausanne.

History shows that Rennes has deep roots spanning more than 2,000 years. It began as a small Gallican village known as Condate. In ancient times, it was one of the major cities of the Duchy of Brittany, alongside Vannes and Nantes. From the early sixteenth century until the French Revolution, it served as a parliamentary and administrative center. The 17th-century Parliament's Palace stands as evidence of this role. The city also played a part in the Stamped Paper Revolt of 1675. A destructive fire in 1720 changed the look of the city forever. Most of the medieval wooden center was destroyed. Consequently, the northern part of the city was rebuilt using stone on a grid plan. The southern part, which was poorer, was not rebuilt in the same way.

Because of its many landmarks, it is labeled a city of art and history. There are over 90 buildings protected as historic monuments. The historic center contains many "hôtels particuliers," which are grand private houses. These were often built in the 18th century near the Parlement de Bretagne. The Parlement de Bretagne is the most famous 17th-century building in the city. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1994 and now houses the Rennes Court of Appeal.
