The city sits on the left bank of the Meurthe river. The Marne–Rhine Canal also runs through the city. It flows parallel to the Meurthe. The city center is 200 meters above mean sea level. Surrounding hills rise about 150 meters above the center. The city proper covers an area of 15 square kilometers. The metropolitan area is much larger. It had 508,793 inhabitants as of 2021. This makes it the largest urban area in Lorraine. It is also the 16th-largest functional urban area in France.

The history of the area began much earlier than the city itself. Human settlement in this region dates back to 800 BC. Early settlers were likely drawn to the river Meurthe. They also found iron ore that was easy to mine. The name Nancy may come from a Gaulish personal name. It was first recorded as Nanciaco. Around 1050, Gerard, the Duke of Lorraine, built a fortified town. This town was called Nanciacum.

Nancy eventually became the seat for the Duchy of Lorraine. This status lasted until 1766. At that time, King Louis XV of France annexed the duchy. Nancy then became a provincial capital.

Different leaders shaped the city's architecture through many stages. In the 15th century, Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy was killed nearby. This happened at the Battle of Nancy in 1477. Following this, René II became the ruler of Lorraine. A major change occurred in the 18th century due to royal marriages. Emperor Charles arranged for Maria Theresa of Austria to marry Duke François of Lorraine. Because the Emperor had no male heir, the throne went to Maria Theresa. This led to the exiled Polish king, Stanislaus I, receiving the duchy in 1736.

Stanislaus I oversaw a period of growth for the city. He promoted Baroque culture and architecture.

One of the most famous results of this era is the Ville-Neuve. This is the "new town" built during the 18th century. It sits south of the medieval Vieille Ville. The Vieille Ville contains the Palace of the Dukes of Lorraine.

It also holds the 14th-century Porte de la Craffe. Stanislaus I commissioned the construction of the Place Stanislas. An architect named Emmanuel Héré designed this large square. It was built between 1752 and 1756. This square connects the old parts of the city with the new. Because of its beauty, UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1983. The Place Stanislas was recently renovated and reopened in 2005.

In the late 19th century, Nancy became a center for the Art Nouveau movement. This was a style of art and design. A group called the École de Nancy led this movement.

Famous artists like Émile Gallé and Victor Prouvé were part of this collective. They worked on decorative arts like glass and furniture. This era earned Nancy the nickname "capital of Eastern France." The city's legacy is still visible in many buildings and glassworks. You can see these works in the Musée de l'École de Nancy. This museum is located in the 1909 villa of Eugène Corbin. The Musée des Beaux-Arts also holds important Art Nouveau collections.

Today, Nancy is a vital center for science and education. It is home to the University of Lorraine. This is one of the largest universities in France.

The city's climate is described as oceanic. It is a bit more extreme than other large French cities. It is sometimes called a continental climate. Winters are cold and dry. Summers are warm, though not always sunny. Mists are common during the autumn months.

Many cultural institutions make Nancy a lively place to visit. The Opéra national de Lorraine provides musical performances. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy houses paintings from the 15th to 20th centuries. Visitors can also explore the city's many gardens. The Jardin botanique du Montet is a major botanical garden. Other green spaces include the Pépinière and Parc Sainte-Marie. The city is also famous for its local treats. These include macarons and bergamotes. Bergamotes are candies flavored with bergamot essential oil.
