Annecy is the largest city and the prefecture of the Haute-Savoie department. It is located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France.

The city sits at the northern tip of Lake Annecy. It is positioned south of Geneva, Switzerland. Because it lies between the lake and the mountains, it is called the "Pearl of the French Alps."

The city controls the northern entrance to the lake gorge. This location makes it a central point for the surrounding landscape.

The geography of the area is defined by water and high peaks. The Thiou river flows through the old city center. This river creates three canals that give the city its nickname, "Venice of the Alps."

The Fier river forms part of the northwestern border of the commune. Surrounding the city are several mountains, including Mont Veyrier, Mont Semnoz, La Tournette, and Parmelan. The climate is oceanic, which means it is influenced by its elevation. Summers are usually moderate, but they can have extreme heat spikes. Winters often bring freezing temperatures and occasional snowfall.

Annecy has a long and complex history involving many different rulers. It began as a settlement during the Roman era. In the 10th century, it served as the court for the counts of Geneva. By 1401, the city passed to the counts of Savoy. In 1434, it became the capital of Savoy.

During the 16th century, the city became a center for the Counter-Reformation. This happened as the Bishopric of Geneva was transferred to Annecy in 1535. Francis de Sales served as the bishop from 1602 to 1622. He helped establish the city's role as a Catholic citadel. Finally, the annexation of Savoy in 1860 merged the city into France.

The urban structure of the city has changed significantly over time. For many years, the population remained stable at about 50,000 inhabitants. This was because there was little building land between the lake and the protected Semnoz mountain. However, a major merger occurred on January 1, 2017. Annecy merged with the former communes of Annecy-le-Vieux, Cran-Gevrier, Meythet, Pringy, and Seynod. This merger extended the city's population to 128,199 inhabitants. The wider urban area now includes 177,622 people. This makes Annecy the seventh largest city in its region.

Historical architecture provides many notable landmarks for visitors. The Palais de l'Isle is a 12th-century castle located on an island in the Thiou river.

It served as a courthouse and a prison for many years. It was even used as a prison during World War II. Today, it is a historical monument that houses a local history museum. The Château d'Annecy was also an important site as the home of the Counts of Geneva. These structures show the deep history of the region's governance.

The economy of Annecy has evolved from manufacturing to tourism and technology. In the 19th century, the city focused on silk, linen, and cotton manufacturing. It also produced glass, cutlery, and leather goods. Today, the industrial legacy continues through major companies. These include Salomon, Ubisoft, and Dassault Aviation.

Tourism is also a massive part of the economy. People visit for the lake's summer facilities and nearby winter resorts. The city also hosts the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, which began in 1963. This festival is one of the oldest in France.

Sports play a vital role in the culture and economy of the Annecy basin. The area is a world leader for paragliding. It also attracts people for watersports like sailing, rowing, and wakeboarding. In the winter, people use nearby resorts like La Clusaz for skiing.
