It sits within the Maltese archipelago and is part of the Republic of Malta. After the main island of Malta, Gozo is the second-largest island in this group. The island feels very rural and is less developed than its neighbor. Many people call the residents Gozitans. As of 2021, about 39,287 people lived on the island.

The island is known for its scenic hills. These hills are even featured on the Gozo coat of arms.

Nature and history are found everywhere on the island. The Ġgantija temples are very famous historic sites. These are some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world. Local legends say that giants built these massive stone temples.

There are other natural wonders like the Inland Sea and the Wied il-Mielaħ Window. A famous limestone arch called the Azure Window once stood in Dwejra. Sadly, that natural arch collapsed on March 8, 2017. You can also find sandy beaches at Ramla Bay and Nadur.

Over the years, many different groups have lived there. The Carthaginians built a temple to Astarte on the islands. Later, the Greeks likely occupied the island as well. Rome annexed the island around 218 BC. In 1530, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V gave the island to the Knights Hospitalier. This history shows how many cultures shaped the island.

Life on the island is closely linked to the island of Malta. Most people travel between them by using a ferry.

Once you arrive at the port, you can take a bus. There are also taxis and hire cars available for visitors.

There are many ideas for how to connect the two islands. Some people want to build a large bridge. A study found a bridge could cost €1 billion to build.

Other people prefer the idea of an underground tunnel. An 11 km long tunnel under the sea has been proposed. Scientists have even used special tools to study the rocks under the sea. They used an air gun to send sound through the water. This helps them see the layers of the earth below. These studies help leaders decide the best way to link the islands.
