Gourami

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Gouramis are a special group of freshwater fish. They belong to the family Osphronemidae. These fish live across much of Asia. Their homes stretch from the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia. They even reach toward Korea. The name comes from the Sundanese word "gurame."

Many of these fish have long feelers. These feelers are at the front of their pelvic fins. They are very interesting living things to study.

Gouramis have a unique way to breathe. They are known as labyrinth fishes. This means they have a lung-like organ called a labyrinth. This organ helps them gulp air from the surface. It lets them use oxygen from the air. This is a vital way for them to live. It helps them survive in warm and shallow water. Such water often has very little oxygen in it.

Scientists have looked at the history of these fish. The oldest known gourami is a fossil. It is named Ombilinichthys yamini. This fossil comes from the Sangkarewang Formation in Sumatra, Indonesia. It lived during the early to mid Eocene period. Researchers found another fossil from this same place. It was linked to the Osphromus goramy fish in the 1930s. However, that second fossil is now lost to us.

There are about 133 recognized species of gouramis today. These species are split into four subfamilies. They are also part of about 15 different genera. One subfamily is called Belontiinae. Another is called Osphroneminae, which was named by van der Hoeven in 1832. The genus Betta was named by Bleeker in 1850. Some gouramis, like the Giant gourami, are used for food. People in maritime Southeast Asia often fry them in sauce.

Many people keep gouramis in home aquariums. People love them for their bright colors. They are also quite intelligent. Some gouramis can even recognize their owners. They like to explore plants and rocks in their tanks. Males often show great care for their young. They might build a foam raft to keep eggs afloat. You must be careful with their temperament, though. Some can be aggressive toward other fish in the tank.
