Gouramis are a group of freshwater fish. They live in Asia. This includes places like India and Korea.

Scientists found an old fossil named Ombilinichthys. This is the oldest known gourami.

These fish have a special way to breathe. They have a labyrinth organ. This is a lung-like part in their body. It lets them gulp air from the surface. This helps them live in warm, shallow water. This water often has very little oxygen.

Many gouramis take care of their young. Some fish, like the betta, carry eggs in their mouths. This is called mouthbrooding. Other fish build nests made of bubbles. Many males protect the eggs until they hatch.

Some gouramis are popular in tanks at home. People like them for their bright colors. They are also quite smart. They can recognize the people who feed them. Some species, like the dwarf gourami, are very common. Other big fish might be mean to other fish. You should not keep two males together. They can become very aggressive.
