People often call them bettas. They are native to Southeast Asia. This includes places like Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Vietnam. In Thailand, they are the national aquatic animal. These fish are known for being very colorful.

People love them because they are beautiful and easy to care for. Many different kinds of bettas live in homes around the world today.

These fish have a special way to breathe. They have a labyrinth organ. This is a lung-like part that lets them take in air from the surface.

This helps them live in shallow water. In places like rice paddies, the water can get very warm. This warmth makes oxygen leave the water quickly. Because of their labyrinth organ, bettas can thrive where other fish might struggle. They can live in water that is not very clean or has little oxygen.

Humans have a long history with these fish. They were first domesticated in Thailand over 1,000 years ago.

At first, people bred them for aggression. They were even used for gambling matches. Later, they became known outside of Thailand. King Rama III is said to have given some to a man named Theodore Cantor. Cantor was a scientist from Denmark. By the late 19th century, they became popular as ornamental fish in the West.

Bettas come in many different shapes and colors.

In the wild, they are usually green, brown, or grey. They only show bright colors when they are agitated. However, people have used selective breeding to make them look different. This has created many "designer fish" with long fins and bright hues. You can tell a female apart by looking for a small tube called an ovipositor.

Male bettas are very territorial animals.

If two males are in a small space, they will fight. This can be dangerous and may result in death. In nature, they live in places with lots of plants. These plants give them a place to hide and claim as their own. Today, wild bettas are considered vulnerable. This is because of pollution and the loss of their natural homes.
