He was part of the Mercury Seven, the first group of American astronauts. He was also the youngest of those seven original explorers. Cooper grew up loving flight from a very early age. His parents owned a small biplane, which is a plane with two sets of wings. He even flew a plane by himself when he was only 12 years old.

By the time he was 16, he had his own pilot license.

In 1963, Cooper flew a very important mission called Mercury-Atlas 9.

He flew in a small spacecraft that he named Faith 7. During this 34-hour trip, he did many things for the first time. He was the first American to sleep in space. He was also the first American to spend an entire day in space. During the flight, his equipment had many serious problems.

Cooper had to use manual control to guide the ship. This means he flew the craft himself instead of using automatic tools. He landed safely in the ocean near a recovery ship.

Cooper's journey to space began with years of hard work and training. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Later, he joined the United States Air Force in 1949. He studied aerospace engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Ohio.

In 1956, he became a test pilot. This is a job where pilots fly new or experimental planes to see how they work. He even survived a scary plane crash with his friend Gus Grissom. They both escaped the fire without any injuries.

Cooper went on another big mission in 1965 with Gemini 5.

He flew with pilot Pete Conrad to set a new record. They stayed in space for 190 hours and 56 minutes. This is almost eight full days in orbit. This long trip was very important for science. It showed that humans could survive in space long enough to travel to the Moon.

This proved that space travel to far places was possible.

When he was not in space, Cooper loved fast things. He enjoyed racing cars and speedboats. He even entered many different boat races in places like Salton City.
