People often call it just the "brimstone." This name comes from the old word for sulphur. It matches the bright yellow color of the male's wings. It is a very important insect to study. Scientists have looked at it for a long time.

This butterfly has a very interesting way it works. It uses different homes for different parts of its life. In the spring, adults go to wetlands to breed. They look for two types of buckthorn plants. These plants are host plants, which means they provide food for the babies.

The adults lay eggs on the underside of the leaves. This keeps the eggs hidden from hungry animals. When the eggs hatch, the caterpillars eat the leaves to grow. They go through five stages of growing, called instars. After they grow, they make a pupa that looks like a curled leaf.

Humans have known about this butterfly for a long time. A scientist named Linnaeus first described it in 1758. He wrote about it in his book called Systema Naturae. Early naturalists in Britain even called it the "butter-coloured fly." This is likely where the word "butterfly" came from. It is one of the longest-living butterflies in the world. It can live for ten months or even a full year.

There are many facts about how they stay safe. Both the caterpillars and the adults use protective coloration. This means their colors help them blend in with plants. The caterpillars are green with white hairs. They rest on the middle of a leaf to stay hidden.

The adult butterflies look like green leaves too. This helps them hide during the winter. They spend seven months sleeping in woodlands. This long sleep is called hibernation. They hide in evergreen leaves or holly bushes to stay safe.

Males and females look very different from each other. This is called sexual dimorphism. Males have bright sulphur-yellow wings. They also have iridescence, which means their wings shine in the light. Females have greenish-white wings and do not shine. Both have orange spots on their wings. They also have pink heads and white hair on their bodies. This variety helps the species survive in the wild. It is a wonderful example of how nature works.
