It is also known as the cabbage butterfly or the cabbage white. You might find these insects in meadows, parks, or even vegetable gardens. They are very common across Europe, North Africa, and Asia. These butterflies are strong fliers that can travel long distances. Some can even fly more than 800 kilometers during their travels.

Because they love certain plants, they are often found near farms.

The life of a large white follows a very specific way it works. First, a female butterfly finds a green leaf to lay her eggs.

She uses her legs to tap the leaf to see if it is good. The eggs are pale yellow at first, but they turn black before hatching. Once they hatch, the larvae, or caterpillars, begin to eat. They grow through five stages called instars. In the third stage, they eat a huge amount of food.

This eating can cause a lot of damage to the plants they live on.

Learning about these butterflies has happened over a long time. Scientists and people in different lands have watched them closely. In New Zealand, the butterfly is called the great white butterfly. It was found in Nelson in 2010, but it was an unwanted pest there. In October 2013, the government even offered a reward to people who caught them.

People captured 134 butterflies in just two weeks. By December 2014, the butterfly was officially gone from New Zealand.

There are many interesting facts about how these butterflies look. The adults have white wings with black tips on the front.

Female butterflies have two black spots on each wing. The underside of the wing is a pale green color. This color acts as camouflage to help them hide while resting. The average wingspan for these butterflies is between 5 and 6.5 cm.

Males and females look very similar, which is quite rare for butterflies.

You can see how these butterflies connect to your own backyard. They love to visit nectar plants like thistles or buddleia.

They also seek out plants like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and oil-seed rape. These plants provide the special nutrients the larvae need to grow. If the larvae do not get enough high-quality food, they might die.
