In 1814, a scientist named Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga found fossils in Uruguay. At first, many people thought these fossils belonged to a giant sloth called Megatherium. They thought the armor belonged to the sloth instead of an armadillo.

Physically, the Glyptodon was built for protection and bulk feeding. It was a quadrupedal animal, meaning it walked on four legs. Its most striking feature was a heavy armored carapace, or top shell. This shell was not a single solid piece of bone. Instead, it was composed of hundreds of interconnected osteoderms. These are bony structures that develop within the dermis, or the skin.

The animal's internal structure was also unique. Its pelvis was fused to the carapace, and it possessed an amalgamated vertebral column. These features, along with short limbs and small digits, helped support its heavy, armored body.

Glyptodon occupied specific ecological niches in the South American landscape. It primarily lived at the edges of forests and within grasslands.

The animal had a wide muzzle, which was a physical adaptation for bulk feeding. This allowed it to consume large amounts of vegetation at once. Its diet consisted of grasses and other plants. The history of discovering Glyptodon is complex and filled with early scientific confusion. In 1814, Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga found fossils in Uruguay, including a femur and carapace fragments.

However, many early paleontologists incorrectly believed these fossils belonged to the giant ground sloth, Megatherium. This "armored Megatherium" hypothesis suggested that the sloth itself possessed bony armor.

Modern science has refined our understanding of how Glyptodon relates to other animals. It is morphologically and phylogenetically most similar to the genus Glyptotherium. This means they share similar physical forms and evolutionary lineages.

However, several key differences exist between the two. Glyptodon was generally larger on average than Glyptotherium. It also possessed a more elongated carapace, a relatively shorter tail, and a more robust zygoma, which is the cheek bone. While some fossils once assigned to Glyptodon in North America were later moved to Glyptotherium, the distinction between these closely related genera remains a key part of studying prehistoric South American life.

In terms of scale, Glyptodon was truly enormous. It could reach lengths of up to 2 meters, or about 6.56 feet.

Its weight could reach as much as 400 kilograms, which is approximately 880 pounds. This massive size made it a significant part of its ecosystem. While the armor provided defense, Glyptodon still lived alongside dangerous predators. These included the saber-tooth cat Smilodon, the large canid Protocyon, and the giant bear Arctotherium.

The ability to survive in a world of such large carnivores was likely tied to its heavy osteoderm armor.

The extinction of Glyptodon occurred around 12,000 years ago at the end of the Late Pleistocene. This period saw the disappearance of most large mammals in the Americas.

There is evidence that the arrival of Paleoindians may have played a role in this event. Some findings suggest that humans may have hunted these animals.
