The animal had a thick shell called a carapace. This shell was made of hundreds of small bones. We call these bones osteoderms. This armor covered its back, tail, and skull. The armor helped protect it from predators. These predators included saber-tooth cats and giant bears.

Glyptodons ate plants like grass. They had a wide mouth to help them eat a lot of food. They lived near forests and grasslands. Scientists found many fossils of these animals. At first, some people thought they were giant ground sloths. A scientist named Richard Owen named the Glyptodon in 1839. These big animals died out a long time ago. Some evidence shows that humans may have hunted them.
