Glass frogs are amazing small creatures found in rainforests. They live in Central America and Colombia. Most of these frogs have a lime green color. However, their bellies have skin that is translucent. This means the skin is clear enough to see through. You can actually see their internal organs, called viscera. This includes their heart, liver, and gastrointestinal tract.

Watching a glass frog is like looking at a tiny, living machine. You can even see their heart beating as it pumps blood.

These frogs use a clever way to hide from predators. This trick is called edge diffusion. Most glass frogs have an opaque green back. Their legs are more translucent than their bodies. When they rest on a leaf, their clear legs help soften their edges. This makes their outline look less noticeable to hungry birds. This helps them blend into the brightness of the leaves.

Scientists used computer models to show this works well. These models showed that translucent frogs were attacked by birds much less often.

Glass frogs have a very special way to stay hidden while sleeping. When they are active, their blood makes them easier to see. But when they sleep, they hide most of their blood. They move their red blood cells into their liver. This makes their bodies look even more clear.

This is a very hard job for a body to do. In humans, this would cause dangerous blood clotting. Glass frogs can move these cells without any clotting at all. This discovery might help doctors understand blood better in the future.

People have been studying these frogs for a long time. Marcos Jiménez de la Espada first described a species in 1872. He found a specimen in northeastern Ecuador. Later, many other scientists like Edward H. Taylor studied them. Taylor proposed the family name Centrolenidae in 1945.

In 1973, John D. Lynch and William E. Duellman found many species in the Andes. Since then, researchers have found almost 50 species in Colombia alone. Many different scientists continue to study how these frogs change and grow.

Life for a glass frog happens mostly in trees and shrubs. They are arboreal, which means they live high up in the plants. They eat small insects and stay near forest streams.

Mating happens on leaves hanging over the water. A male calls to a female to find her. They use a position called amplexus, where the male wraps his arms around the female. After mating, the female lays eggs on a leaf. The male stays to guard the eggs for many days. Eventually, the eggs fall into the water to hatch.
