These frogs are very important to the forests where they live. They belong to a family called Phyllomedusidae. Most of these frogs live high up in the forest canopy. This is the top layer of the trees. They need these thick forests to stay safe. The dense leaves help them hide from predators.

These frogs have a special way of moving through the trees. They have long and slender limbs. Their bodies are also quite flat. To climb, they use webbed toes. They also have adhesive pads on the tips of their digits. These pads help them stick to surfaces.

Their eyes are large and stick out from their heads. Their skin can feel smooth or it can be slightly bumpy. Some frogs even change their color. The lemur leaf frog is green during the day. It turns reddish-brown or orange-tan at night.

Scientists have studied these frogs for a long time. In the past, they were called Pachymedusa. Now, we know they are closely related to the genus Phyllomedusa. Many different people have named the species in this group. For example, Cope named the red-eyed tree frog in 1862. Boulenger named the lemur leaf frog in 1882. Other researchers like Duellman and Ruiz-Carranza have found more species too.

There are 14 known species in the Agalychnis genus.

They live in the Neotropical region. This includes Mexico and Central America. They also live in parts of northwestern South America. The frogs vary in size. Their bodies can be 30mm to 88mm long. Some species live in Costa Rica and Panama. The blue-sided leaf frog lives in those places. The warty leaf frog lives in Colombia and Ecuador.

You might recognize these frogs from stories about tropical jungles. They are part of a big world of living things. Most stay in the trees to find food and shelter. However, they must go down to ponds to breed. They gather around the water to lay their eggs. This cycle helps new frogs grow in the forest. It is a very busy way of life.
