They belong to the genus Alouatta and are among the largest New World monkeys. These animals are very important to their forest homes. They act as seed dispersal agents, which means they help plants grow in new places. As they move and eat, they spread seeds through their digestive systems. This helps keep the tropical forests healthy and full of life.

To make their deep, guttural howls, males have an enlarged hyoid bone in their throat. This bone is pneumatized, which means it has air spaces inside it. The large bone helps them create sounds that carry through thick trees. These howls help the monkeys protect their territory from other groups. They also use calls to advertise where good food is located.

Fossil evidence from the Miocene epoch gives us many clues. One fossil found in Colombia is named Stirtonia victoriae. This fossil is about 13 million years old. Its teeth show that these early monkeys were already eating leaves. This suggests that leaf-eating helped them grow into the larger animals we see today.

Howler monkeys have many interesting physical facts.

They have prehensile tails that can grab branches. Some tails are even five times longer than the monkey's body. Their noses are very keen and can smell food from 2 km away. Most howler monkeys live in groups of six to fifteen animals. These groups usually have one to three adult males and several females. They can live for a long time, between 15 and 20 years.

Humans have a long history of noticing these amazing creatures.

The ancient Maya people saw them as divine patrons. They believed howler monkeys were connected to gods and important artists. A writer named John Lloyd Stephens once described them as looking very solemn. In modern times, some people in Argentina keep black howler monkeys as pets. However, most howler monkeys prefer to live freely in the wild canopy.
