They are famous for their loud, deep calls. These sounds are called howls.

To make these sounds, males have a large hyoid bone. The hyoid is a bone in the throat. This bone helps them make very loud noises. These howls help the monkeys protect their space. They also tell other monkeys where food is.

Howler monkeys eat many things. They mostly eat leaves. This way of eating is called being a folivore. They also eat fruit, nuts, and flowers. When they eat fruit, they help the forest grow. They eat the fruit and then poop out the seeds. This spreads the seeds to new places.

These monkeys have very special tails. Their tails are prehensile. This means they can use their tails to grab things. A tail can be five times longer than its body! Their tails are strong enough to hold their whole weight. Most howler monkeys live in groups of six to fifteen. They can live for 15 to 20 years.
